Frequently asked
Straight answers about instruction, training, and captain services.
Common questions from Bay Area boat owners. Don't see yours here? Send me a note and I'll answer directly.
Do you teach aboard my own boat?+
Yes — nearly always. Owner instruction and insurance-required training are designed to happen aboard your vessel, in your home marina. It's the fastest, most practical way to become comfortable with the boat you actually own.
Do you offer private sailing instruction in San Francisco Bay?+
Yes. Private sailing instruction covers sail handling, boat handling, reefing, anchoring, navigation, and crew communication — aboard your boat, in San Francisco Bay, Marin, the East Bay, or the Delta.
Do you offer private powerboat instruction?+
Yes. Private powerboating instruction covers throttle control, close-quarters maneuvering, docking in wind and current, marina handling, and confidence at speed. Single-screw and twin-screw vessels welcome.
What is owner instruction?+
Owner instruction is one-on-one, hands-on captain-led teaching aboard your own boat. It covers docking, systems, seamanship, safety, and whatever specific skills you want to develop — at your pace, on your vessel.
Can you help with insurance-required boat training?+
Yes. I build customized 10, 20, and 40-hour training plans that meet common underwriter requirements. Training is typically structured in practical 3-hour sessions with signed hourly logs you can submit to your insurer.
Do you offer docking lessons?+
Absolutely — docking is one of the most requested skills. We work on approach planning, spring-line technique, backing, wind and current strategy, and repeated practice landings in your actual slip.
What captain services do you provide?+
Local outings, private vessel support, owner assistance on longer days, guest-day captaining, sea trials, and vessel deliveries throughout San Francisco Bay and the Delta.
What should I expect during a lesson?+
Sessions typically run three hours. We start dockside — talking through the plan and your systems — then move to on-the-water work with clear, repeatable technique. You'll leave with a plan for the next session.
How many hours of instruction does a new boat owner usually need?+
It depends on your experience and the vessel. Many owners feel meaningfully more capable after 6–10 hours; insurance-required plans typically run 10, 20, or 40 hours. We'll agree on a plan up front based on your goals.
Where do you offer instruction and captain services?+
San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta — including Sausalito, Marin, Richmond, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Alameda, Redwood City, and Stockton.
How do you handle weather and safety decisions?+
Safety comes first, always. Every session and delivery depends on weather, tides, vessel readiness, and the experience aboard. If conditions aren't right, we reschedule or work dockside on systems and technique instead.
